Follow accounts, read books and listen to podcasts from people committed to educating and uplifting.
Don’t make financial decisions based on guilt.
Don’t make financial decisions based on fear.
Drop the idea that investing is only for the super-powerful and super-wealthy.
It is not an all or nothing. If you cannot invest your max in your retirement that’s okay. Do the best you can.
Don’t wait til your debt-free to invest in retirement.
Invest in your 401k or FSA to lower your taxable income.
Look into a spousal Roth IRA
Budgets exist to serve you. Not the other way around. If your budget isn’t working erase it and start over.
Budget for things that make you happy.
Your budget, day pay off, retirement strategy and financial priorities will look different from someone else’s and that’s perfectly fine.
Make a will, plan your estate.
Get some life insurance! And audit your other insurance needs to make sure you’re not overpaying and have the coverage you need.
Create an emergency fund. I recommend one month’s expenses.
Pull your credit report and make sure there are not mistakes.
Track your net worth.
Set yourself up with your bank to protect yourself. See if they offer text fraud alerts.
Look into college savings for your kids.
Determine how much you need to retire.
