3 things to do when you're so tired of being frugal you could scream
/I am rerunning this post from July. I just feel like the message fits right into our series on better savings and spending habits. Sometimes you are just so tired of being frugal. But you have to keep going. Here is a little encouragement.
Last week an incredible opportunity presented itself. And just as soon as I had it in my hands, it fell to the floor, crashed and burned.
Without going into the details it was the chance to travel to somewhere I have always wanted to visit but haven't had the chance, and to network with some people I have been wanted to meet face to face.
I had it all planned out. I was ready to go and even told close family members and friends about the opportunity. And then the wind left my little sails.
The Delta Sky Miles I thought were going to cover the cost of paying for my flight weren't. A "recent policy change" meant I was going to have to pay $300 out of pocket.
That's a lot of money. And since Jason and I are saving for a new roof in the next six months, I just can't justify spending that much money.
Outwardly I sighed, smiled at my husband and said "a new roof is more important." But inwardly I stomped my foot. I threw a hissy fit and I cried out "I am so tired of living on a budget."
And all of this came on the heels of learning that a conference I was scheduled to speak at had been cancelled. I felt disappointed and my ego had been dealt a huge blow.
Do you ever get like that? You are just sick to death of pinching pennies, clipping coupons or hitting the clearance rack?
I know that all of that makes me sound like a brat. Believe me I am the first to tell you I have it easy. I wouldn't trade lives or problems with anyone.
But sometimes I just get tired of putting our savings goals first or living on a budget. And I know I am not alone on this. Based on your emails and Facebook comments, a lot of you are the same way.
So what do you do? How do you get over it, suck it up and move on without feeling totally defeated?
1. Count your blessings.
Like I said, I would not trade my life with anyone! And I certainly wouldn't want to trade problems with anyone else. So when I start feeling this way I just take a minute to count my blessings.
I know some people have a blessings or gratitude journal. For me I just need to say them to myself or thank God out loud for them.
It's usually something like this, "Thank you God for your grace and forgiveness. Thank you for my husband and children, my health and my home."
Sweet and to the point.
2. Find a creative outlet.
I have decided to redo my bathroom. I know that sounds like a huge and expensive undertaking. But I challenged myself to do it for basically no money. We needed a new shower curtain and that's pretty much been the ONLY expense. I am using found items, repurposing some other items and getting really creative.
I also found some paint in the pool shed and I am touching up some areas the previous owner of our house left unpainted. It feels like I have a whole new kitchen based on the two sections I painted.
3. Remind yourself of why you're doing this.
Why are you doing this? Why are you living the way you're living? Is it because you're in debt and don't want to be anymore? Is it so you can buy a house? Pay for college? Help those in need?
Remind yourself why you're doing this. This weekend Jason and I got a TON of work done around the house. We prepped our garden for fall. Planted three trees, I cut the back acre of our lot (I've NEVER CUT GRASS BEFORE) and we got so much done inside.
All of that work was a great reminder of why we are so frugal. We are trying to pay off our home early so we can have a lot more freedom. So we can travel without guilt, so we can help others generously.
What about you? Do you ever get tired of being frugal or living on a budget? What do you do?
